I finished the Provincial map of Camar’a. Could you guys take a look at the information? Any ideas or critiques? I’ve spent years gathering all of this together in a form that makes sense. (Mind my grammar/spelling..)
The cultures and languages are based off real ones, I respect the cultures and languages used and I know I am not the only one to do this…Dragon Age?
Provinces:
Gaelia: The main hold of Camar’a, the capitol city of the Kingdom called Illander can be found here. The Zeltans of Itaena and Gheldan were conquered in ancient times and integrated into Gaelian society. The predominating human culture of Camar’a is Gaelian with the usage of Gaelian Trom (Old English) and Gaelian (English) as the common language throughout the continent. Worship of the Lord of Light and King of the Gods and man (Reinn Anon) dominates this area religiously.
Fefiniol Rhan: The trade province between the inhospitable northern desert lands and Camar’a. The province is named after the ‘half breeds’ that have taken up residence and dominated the economy and merchant trading ventures in the area. Half Elves neither wanted in human society nor in Elven are forced or leave of their own volition to settle here. Fefiniol is victim of constant attack by raiding parties from the north. Religion is not that important to this area and they primarily speak the common tongue.
Grimhorn: This province is a dreary, foggy harsh land where the populace is born knowing they owe duty to the Kingdom to defend it against the monstrosities and magic users that flee into the Styrka Skedja Mountains to Grimhorn’s north. These necromancers and magic users use the mountains as a hide away to continue their diabolical works, unleashing the monsters down into the plains of Grimhorn. If Grey Mount falls the more peaceful provinces to the east will quickly follow. Referred to as the Mountain Lords, these people are hardy and strong, man and woman alike. They pray to the God of Death and Rebirth, Sjel’Nnharma for protection in life and in death. (Norwegian based language.)
Gheldan: Is the primary trade province with the Elven forest of the Mellim’disiel in the West. The Gheldans have at different times raided the Elven borders and their own borders have been raided in return. Icy civility exists between the two parties now as the Camar’ian monarchy has declared open hostility against the Elves blasphemy before the Gods and any and all involved to be killed. Half elves are treated as little better then beggars here. The Gheldans are now mainly Gaelians, no longer Zeltans and pray to Reinn Anon, Lord of Light.
Maighen/Gahoighen: Both provinces are under military occupation by the Camar’ian Monarchy and have been for nearly five hundred years. The Daighn people who have their own tongue, culture and Martyr (Saint Lennoch Lyinigh) in their history, these people are considered inferior to the Gaelians and can hold no military or government positions across Camar’a. However Daighn are a peaceful folk who though chaffed by the occupation show no hostility to their oppressors as their main deity is the Goddess of Compassion, Naik’lea. (Irish Gaelic based language and culture.)
Esuna: Relying completely on fishing and boating, all of Esuna’s resources and wealth come from the ocean. It is the third poorest province behind the Cannesh Steppes and Grimhorn. The cult of the God of Ocean/Waters, Al’shae Oaris is very powerful here and the people are reverently fearful of their deity that could destroy their homes and kill them by hurricanes and typhoons.
Kandelmar: Known as a haven for the moral-less, its capitol is run by the Merchants Guild and Thieves Guild has its base in this city. A very powerful and rich black market exists here and it is said the guards are all paid off, justice having no meaning here. Trade with the south is strictly forbidden religiously and illegal politically but the crown realizes that this city brings great economic growth to the Kingdom and is lax in its crack downs accordingly. The God of Trickery and Luck, Jhes’Khasti is the patron of Kandelmar and The Goddess of Music is the patron of the capitol of Rimedur where the Grand Opera theater was built.
Itanea: The ancestral home of the Zeltans who were conquered and forcefully integrated into Gaelian society thousands of years ago. Ruins of their cities can still be found here, and the last of the Zeltan language (Welsh) survives in the names of the months in the Camar’ian calendar. The great lake of Elra is most widely known place in this province with the capitol called Elra built on it’s shores which houses one of the Continent’s Great Libraries built in honor of the God of Wisdom, He’ar Namin who has blessed the city.
Islay: Under military occupation for almost five hundred years, captured like the Daighn by King Valentiln the Conqueror. Contrary to the Daighn, the Islay have never given up revolting against their foreign oppressors and their rebellions have been brutally put down time and time again. Animosity runs high, stoked on by Shyr’Vaero God of War and Vengeance who has fought by their side for freedom in mortal form for centuries. Islay cannot be military or government officials across Camar’a. (Scottish Gaelic based language and culture.)
The Cannesh Steppes: A rather pacifistic roaming people live in these Steppes, they hold their own chiefdom based governments and have little to do with outside people who are considered barbarians for their violent ways. Living in tune with the world and never settling too long in one place, the Cannesh revere the world and the 16 equally. The Camar’ian Monarchy allows them their freedom from outside sources as long as no outward aggression is seen. (Romanian based language.)
Navarre: The home of the Ae’ael, The Descendents, people of Elvish heritage of great beauty and intellect. They are considered by the Gaelians to be superior beings and even by the Elves as near equals whom they call Le’lis (The Lilies) in reverence. A people once occupied by the Gaelians they are respected and able to hold government and military offices. Technologically advanced they have created the first muskets and pistols. They worship the Queen of the Cosmos, Lady of the Elves, Sila Vor, Reinn Anon’s wife in the Heavens. (French based language and culture.)
Tabrimon: The Jharrik live here, a species of evolution that came from the ocean but is now landlocked. They have steel fins from the backs of legs and arms and a long one straight down their back with differing colored scales around the fins and over the throat. Their culture is militaristic and judicial, watched over by the Goddess of Law and Justice, Meiva. These beings are loyal to the death to the Camar’ian Monarchy and serve each; men, 5 years in the forces, women, three. They have a racial hatred for the centaurs that live in the mountains to their north and are at constant war with these inferior beings. (German based language.)
Any thoughts or ideas?
